For more than 40 years this low-pressure exercise technique has been helping women restore their pelvic floor, core and supporting muscles. It was developed to help post-natal women reduce incontinence, prolapse, tension and diastasis recti, but it can also help prepare the body before pregnancy and relieve many other symptoms. It calms the nervous system, reduces the waistline and improves athletic performance. 

Hypopressives practice is based around breath training, postures, myofascial stretching and neurodynamics. The breathing technique encourages the diaphragm and pelvic floor to not only contract and lift, but also lengthen and release. It trains the body’s muscle chains to function together. The breath hold and rib expansion, known as the apnea breath, cause a suction effect in the abdominal and pelvic areas, lifting the pelvic organs and creating an involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor and supporting muscles. The resulting improved postural alignment and stimulated vagus nerve have a huge impact on pelvic health, as well as encouraging a calm, meditative state.

HYPOPRESSIVES CHANGED MY LIFE

I’m Lucy, the founder of Bristol Hypopressives. I came across the practice after I’d tried every other trick in the book to improve my incontinence and rectocele prolapse. My symptoms began after giving birth to my children, but a lifetime of poor posture and bad breathing habits had also played their part.
